The Office for Civil Rights & Title IX has launched the Know More campaign to raise awareness on:
- how to help prevent relationship violence, stalking and sexual misconduct (“RVSM”);
- how to help support those who are affected by RVSM; and
- where students, faculty and staff can go for resources, support services and to report RVSM.

MSU Resources
Office for Civil Rights and Title IX
The mission of our office is to educate all campus community members regarding how to prevent, identify, and report discrimination, harassment, and gender-based violence; to monitor complaints of discrimination, harassment, and gender-based violence, conduct a fair and equitable investigation of each complaint, and use information from monitoring and investigations to inform prevention education; to connect those affected by discrimination, harassment, and gender-based violence with campus and community resources that will allow them to move forward.
Sexual Assault Program
The MSU Sexual Assault Program provides FREE and confidential individual counseling and support groups to MSU students who are survivors of adult sexual assault or childhood sexual abuse. Additional crisis intervention and advocacy services include: a 24-hour Sexual Assault Crisis Hotline and 24-hour medical advocacy at Sparrow Hospital for survivors who present for Sexual Assault exams. MSU SAP can assist with confidential referrals to community resources for individuals living in other communities.
Sexual Assault and Relationship Violence Prevention Program
The Sexual Assault and Relationship Violence (SARV) Prevention Program promotes safety and improves quality of life by educating students on sexual assault and relationship violence, eliminating violence on campus, empowering students to become advocates for a non-violent community and positively effecting social change. The SARV Prevention Program is a required workshop for all first-year and transfer students.
MSU Safe Place – 517-355-1100
MSU Safe Place is a program that addresses relationship violence and stalking. It serves students, faculty, staff, their spouses/partners and non-affiliated members in the Greater Lansing area. Safe Place provides advocacy, emergency shelter, counseling, support groups, safety planning, information and referrals to survivors of violence and their minor children. All support services are free and confidential.
MSU Crisis Chat – 517-372-6666
This hotline is available to anyone to help them process, if they are feeling triggered, or if they need resources. This 24-hour hotline is available to anyone to help them process, if they are feeling triggered, or if they need resources. The text-based Crisis Chat is available daily from 10am-10pm.
Behavioral Threat Assessment Team (BTAT)
The Michigan State University’s Behavioral Threat Assessment Team (BTAT) exists to facilitate a multidisciplinary, coordinated response to reports of students, employees, or other individuals on campus who have engaged in behavior indicating a possible threat of harm to self or other members of the campus community.
University Policy on Relationship Violence and Sexual Misconduct (RVSM)
The purpose of the Relationship Violence and Sexual Misconduct (RVSM) Policy is to define relationship violence, stalking, and sexual misconduct, describe the process for reporting violations of the Policy, outline the process used to investigate and adjudicate alleged violations of the Policy, and identify resources available to members of the University community who are involved in an incident of relationship violence, stalking, or sexual misconduct.
Prevention, Outreach and Education Department (POE)
The Prevention, Outreach and Education Office (POE) promotes safety and improves quality of life by educating members of the MSU campus community on sexual assault and relationship violence, eliminating violence on campus, empowering staff, faculty and students to become advocates for a non-violent community and positively affecting social change.
MSU Misconduct Hotline – 800-763-0764
Michigan State University has implemented a telephone and web reporting Hotline to help maintain adherence to ethical practices. The purpose of the Hotline is to provide an anonymous method to report known or suspected misconduct for Michigan State University related to fiscal matters, conflicts of interest, employment, medical/HIPAA, research, safety, athletics, discrimination/harassment, hazing, privacy, retaliation, or any other area of legal, policy, or ethical concern not specifically listed.
Resources for Survivors
Healing Assistance Fund
MSU selected the Commonwealth Mediation and Conciliation Inc. (CMCI) and the Minnesota Coalition Against Sexual Assault (MNCASA) to help facilitate access to counseling and mental health services for the victims of former MSU physician Larry Nassar under the MSU Healing Assistance Fund. The $10 million fund is available to MSU health clinic patients and student athletes whom Larry Nassar abused, as well as the parents of these victims. It was set up at the direction of MSU’s Board of Trustees in December 2017.
Nassar Survivor Resources Referral Line – 866-407-1240
Survivors and their parents who need a referral to counseling or mental health services may call Minnesota Coalition Against Sexual Assault to be connected with qualified providers in their areas, no matter where they live. A dedicated 24-hour phone line, (866) 407-1240, at MNCASA is also active.
Michigan Crime Victim Services Commission
The Michigan Crime Victim Services Commission is a state agency in charge of funding and services for victims of a physical crime. It has four programs that serve and support crime victims including: Compensation, Sexual Assault Forensic Exam, Victim Rights and Crime Victim Assistance.
