Dr. Yen-Hwei Lin has been appointed Acting Interim Chair of the Department of Linguistics & Germanic, Slavic, Asian, and African Languages, effective November 5, 2018, through August 15, 2019.
A Professor of Linguistics, Lin served as Department Coordinator from 2013-2015. She also was Associate Chair of the Department of Linguistics & Germanic, Slavic, Asian, and African Languages from 2000-2003 and again from 2006-2009. She was the Director of Graduate Studies from 1999-2003 and Coordinator of the Chinese Program from 1989-1997. And, she has been a Big 10 Academic Alliance Academic Leadership Program Fellow.
“Professor Yen-Hwei Lin has demonstrated impeccable leadership throughout her tenure,” said Christopher P. Long, Dean of the College of Arts & Letters. “Through her many roles at MSU, she has demonstrated a model of how we are prioritizing our core values and putting them into practice.”
Lin currently serves as Co-Editor of Lingua Sinica, an open access international journal on Chinese linguistics, and Associate Editor of Language and Linguistics, an international linguistics journal on the languages in the East Asian and Pacific regions.

Dr. Yen-Hwei Lin
Her research focuses on phonological theory and phonological patterns in Chinese languages/dialects, with additional interests in phonetics, sociolinguistics, and cognitive science. She has received several grants to support her research including from the National Science Foundation and the Humanities and Arts Research Program (HARP).
Lin received her Ph.D. and M.A. both in Linguistics and from the University of Texas at Austin where she was an Assistant Instructor and taught Linguistics and Chinese courses before coming to Michigan State University in 1989.
