Physical Distance, Digital Connection: Building Bridges in Community-based Language Programs

Whirlwind. Curveball. Whiplash. Unexpected. Unprecedented. These were just a few of the words swirling around as we transitioned to remote instruction at the Community Language School (CLS) at Michigan State University last spring. We were catapulted into the unknown of virtual planning, learning and teaching, forcing us to adapt our programs to offer fully remote language classes for families, kids, pre-teens, teens and adults in just a few short weeks and throughout the summer.

Get Out the Vote: Empowering the Women’s Vote highlights how graphic design has been implemented as a powerful tool in politics with poster designs running parallel to activism and social change for over 100 years.  Professors Salchow MacArthur and Skolos discuss with guests the case study of the centennial celebration of the 19th Amendment to catalyze women in design, voting rights, citizenship, community and diversity through poster design.  This Conversation is moderated by 2020 MSU alum, Sarah Davis.

Goeringer Installation Featured in Science Gallery Detroit Exhibit

Professor Lyn Goeringer’s installation, Witnesses, is featured in the Science Gallery Detroit’s current exhibit, Future Present: Design in a Time of Urgency, which runs through December 11, 2020, and is open to the public. A composer and intermedia artist who works with video, sound, and light, Goeringer is an Assistant Professor of Composition in the College of Music and of Film Studies in the Department of English.

MSU NCTE Student Group Wins National Excellence Award for Fourth Consecutive Year

For the fourth consecutive year, MSU’s National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) student organization has earned the NCTE Student Affiliate Excellence Award. The MSU group, which is affiliated with the Department of English, is one of four student organizations from across the country to receive this award this year, which recognizes student groups that meet the NCTE’s qualifications of excellence.
