Dear College of Arts & Letters Staff and Faculty,
During this difficult time, we need to adjust our work expectations. That means, first and foremost, protecting our health, safety, and well-being, and that of our families and communities by working remotely and practicing social distancing. Secondly, we need to focus on providing the best possible student experience that we can under the circumstances through remote teaching. We recognize that this transition is more difficult for some courses than others, and I am grateful for all the ways staff and faculty are helping one another.
Everything outside of these two priorities that can wait should wait.
If you have not done so already, please contact your unit leader for direction about realigning expectations under the pressing weight of current demands. I have asked unit leaders across the College to work with you to identify those functions that can be put on hold because they are not associated with health, safety, and remote teaching. This includes, but is not limited to committee meetings, events, sabbaticals, etc. I assure you that no one will be penalized for prioritizing this vital work. I promise to take the challenges of the present moment into consideration during annual staff and faculty reviews and in the tenure, reappointment, and promotion process. When evaluating your colleagues, I will ask you to do the same. We have entered uncharted territory, and it would be unjust to expect business as usual.
In closing, let me express my deep gratitude for the College of Arts & Letters Educational Technology team for their visionary leadership, tireless effort, and creative ingenuity over the last several days in facilitating the transition to remote teaching.
The generosity of spirit being demonstrated across the College is inspiring. Thank you.
