More than 900 undergraduate students will present their research at the 19th annual University Undergraduate Research and Arts Forum (UURAF), with College of Arts & Letters students making up a large portion of the poster and oral presentations.
At this year’s UURAF, which takes place Friday, April 7, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the MSU Union, 928 undergraduate students are expected to participate. The forum includes poster and oral presentations by undergraduate research teams from all areas of study, giving students an opportunity to showcase their scholarship and creative activities.
Of the students participating, 88 are College of Arts & Letters students, and 56 individuals and teams are presenting posters and oral presentations in two categories judged by College of Arts & Letters faculty, including Humanities and Performing Arts and Linguistics, Languages, and Speech.
Representatives from each department in the College of Arts & Letters will present their work through poster and oral presentations. A few of the projects include:
● “When Fabric Talks Back: An Examination of Coded Messages Used in Textiles,” by Apparel and Textile Design senior Mitchell Fehrle;
● “Introverts and Extroverts in Theatre Classrooms,” by Theatre freshman Sam Meade;
● “Why Have You Got a ‘Got’ in “Have you Got a Got”: Got Insertion in American English,” by Linguistics senior Katherine Rock.
Poster presentations will be going on all day throughout the building, with the Humanities & Performing Arts oral presentations taking place from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the third floor of the Union.
Sponsored by the Office of the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education and the Honors College, the event is free and open to the public.
The UURAF awards ceremony is scheduled for the following Wednesday, April 12, at 3:30 p.m. in the Union Ballroom, during which the prize winners in the various categories will be announced. One first-place award ($100) will be given in each section. First-place award recipients are then considered for the grand prize award, which will be announced in early summer. A total of two grand prizes ($500 each) will be awarded to one program from the science and engineering categories and one program from the humanities, social sciences, and communication arts and sciences categories.
