This fall semester, three College of Arts & Letters students received scholarships from Michigan State University Federal Credit Union and it’s unpaid internship scholarship competition. The students were awarded funds after submitting applications detailing the unpaid work they do for organizations around the Greater Lansing area.

Hally Darnell

Major and Year: Professional Writing | Senior
Hometown: Brighton, Michigan
Organization of Internship: Women’s Center of Greater Lansing

Darnell works as a marketing and social media intern at the Women’s Center of Greater Lansing. Her responsibilities include creating and distributing press releases about the center’s upcoming events and support groups, designing graphics and deliverables like posters, brochures, social and media graphics, and working to design and execute content for social media platforms and the website.

“The Women’s Center is a nonprofit organization where clients are always our first priority. While this is exactly how it should be, it also means that the resources allocated toward marketing are very limited. Receiving the intern scholarship has enabled me to purchase the resources I need to make the most out of my time at the Women’s Center.”

Bethany Dickerson

Major and Year: Linguistics | Senior
Hometown: Midland, Michigan
Organization of Internship: Lansing City Clerk

Dickerson works as an genral city clerk intern for the city of Lansing and is involved in various aspects of municipal government, including maintaining the website and facilitating matters related to the City Council. Recently, she has been focused on the election. She assisted by preparing absentee ballots, training election inspectors, preparing the logistics of the election, actually working at the polls the day of the election, and evaluating the city’s performance.

“This scholarship allowed me to accept an unpaid internship at an organization I was really interested in learning more about. If I hadn’t received the scholarship, I would not have been able to accept the internship, and instead would have had to get a paid job doing something largely irrelevant to my career.”

Amanda Michels

Major and Year: Interdisciplinary Humanities | Senior
Hometown: Howell, Michigan
Organization of Internship: Howell Carnegie District Library

Michels currently is interviewing with museums and libraries in hopes of interning in the spring semester. As one of her main focuses at MSU is digital humanities, she wants to work on projects that focus on helping the company move forward digitally.

“For me, this scholarship means that I will be able to obtain an internship that will benefit me and my future career. As an independent student, it is important for me to be able to work to afford both my education and living expenses. This scholarship gives me the opportunity to gain experience while having peace of mind financially.”
