Spartans Standing Together

Spartan alumni are coming together to offer words of hope and encouragement to current Michigan State University students during this challenging and unprecedented time in our history as they continue their education remotely due to the COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) outbreak. Alumni far and wide have shared their thoughts and support. We have included those words of encouragement below in hope they offer inspiration and resilience as students finish their academic year.

“I’ve not experienced a pandemic before, as likely you haven’t either. It is challenging, but together we will deal with it. I encourage you to find what treats you can for yourself, phone some friends for a good talk, and try to safely help someone you know that needs some help. By helping others and keeping ourselves healthy and rested, we’ll all pull through this tough patch together as a nation and university community. Let’s put our heads together and see what needs to be done. It will take all of our ideas – and we’ll learn some things.”

“Congratulations on choosing MSU College of Arts & Letters. I am a proud alumna of this college. We are having some grey days, but my calendar says it is SPRING! We all are going through this new problem. Let me say it is just as frustrating for me at 80+ as you at your young age. Know that I am sending you my best wishes for the brighter days of SPRING.”

“So now we are put to the test, each one of us individually, to confront the challenge of putting our talents into action for the benefit of the planet and mankind. Let me put it simply: listen, reason, and do each little thing necessary every day with all your love and compassion for life. I’ve been in Italy since 1974 and after a life full of being a missionary, nurse, and English teacher and artist, I ‘m following the news and praying for all of you. When the crisis is over anybody can visit Italy and be my guest!”

“Although all plans are being thrown by the wayside and each day is stranger than the last, we should take this as a time to pause. We have our whole lives to run at full speed, but one bright side of this is an opportunity for you to slow down and learn more about yourself or perhaps explore a topic or activity you’ve always been interested in, but never had time to try. You never know what you can do or what might be created out of this trying time. Trust yourselves. Know that you’ll get through this. Know that millions of people are also feeling like you are, so you are definitely not alone. You’ll get through this. We all will…because Spartans will no matter what. All the best. GO GREEN!”

“This is a very significant event in the lives of our nation and how we deal with it as a community will test our character over the next several months. I am hopeful that the MSU community comes together and works as a team to move forward and navigate this new tomorrow. If nothing else, the students taking fiction and poetry writing classes will have plenty of fodder for their pens and computer writing programs! Best of luck with your work and your future at MSU and beyond.”
