Philanthropy Helps Support Student’s Financial and Academic Needs

MJ Monteiro’s passion for art became an extraordinary pursuit at Michigan State University where, with Spartan support, they have received funding as an Art History and Visual Culture major and have worked multiple student jobs supported by alumni.

“Philanthropy contributes greatly to me being able to both support my needs financially as well as my needs academically,” said Monteiro, who is now a senior at MSU with plans to graduate in 2026,

Monteiro currently works at the MSU Broad Art Museum as a Gallery Guide, an Event Assistant, and an Exhibitions Assistant, in addition to their work as a Resident Assistant. These opportunities align with Monteiro’s interests, allowing them to gain valuable professional experience in the arts while continuing their studies.

“Being involved on campus is really meaningful,” Monteiro said. “MSU offers so many opportunities both on campus and outside of campus to interact with professionals and complete professional development, and that is something that is possible because of the connections MSU has off and on campus.”

“For me, giving is a lot about feeling for other people and putting yourself in their shoes and providing opportunities to flourish and grow and become their own person.”

Working at the MSU Broad Art Museum, Monteiro has seen the positive impact of Spartan generosity firsthand.

“Our museum actually happens to be completely free because of philanthropy and the gifts of MSU alums,” Monteiro said. “For me, giving is a lot about feeling for other people and putting yourself in their shoes and providing opportunities to flourish and grow and become their own person.”

Art continues to bring joy to Monteiro, and connects students, alumni, and community members alike on campus. Together, they contribute creativity, explore new ideas, and build the foundation for a better world.
