Tom Lovik, Professor of German in Michigan State University’s Department of Linguistics and Germanic, Slavic, Asian, and African Languages, received the Michigan World Language Association’s (MIWLA) Georges J. Joyaux Post-Secondary Educator Award at the MIWLA annual conference in Lansing on October 18.

The Georges J. Joyaux Award is given to an outstanding post-secondary faculty member or administrator who is committed to the principle of expanding Americans’ understanding of world languages and cultures to enhance their standing in education, culture, and business in the world.

I am honored to receive the 2018 George J. Joyaux Award Post-Secondary Educator Award and humbled by the support of my colleagues at MSU who nominated me.

Lovik’s nomination received the enthusiastic support of administrators and colleagues who noted that he “has demonstrated time and again the depth of his commitment to expanding students’ understanding of the world with a maximum of collegiality and mentorship, and a generous sense of citizenship in the world of language education beyond the boundaries of the university.” They cited his authorship of an influential German textbook, his editorship of Die Unterrichtspraxis/Teaching German, the leading scholarly journal for German language and culture pedagogy, and his service to students both inside and outside the classroom in support of his nomination.

“I am honored to receive the 2018 George J. Joyaux Award Post-Secondary Educator Award and humbled by the support of my colleagues at MSU who nominated me,” Lovik said. “It is an honor to represent George Joyaux, who taught French for many years at MSU, and I appreciate the recognition from the Michigan World Language Association shown to me. Working with students, secondary school teachers and colleagues to promote the study of language and culture of world languages has been a sheer joy.”

The Michigan World Language Association is a state association for language education professionals from all levels of instruction and representing all languages. MIWLA supports and promotes world language education through innovative opportunities for professional development and networking, and seeks to advance world language proficiency for all students.
