Michigan State University

All students can explore art, theatre, film, and creative writing, regardless of major.

You don't have to have be an art, theatre, or English major to explore your creative side. Check out these opportunities open to all students:

Department of Art and Art History

Students interested in studio art (graphic design, photography, sculpture, ceramics, painting, and printmaking) should contact the department office at (517) 355-7610. The department sponsors two annual exhibitions of student work: the Master of Fine Arts Exhibition and the Undergraduate Exhibition. Student groups include the Design Center, the Art History Association, and the Graduate Art Group.

Got a thing for Greek sculpture? Gothic cathedrals? Georgia O'Keeffe? Explore your interest in one of the many art history courses offered by the department.

Kresge Art Museum

Kresge Art Museum is home to MSU's collection of nearly 7,000 works of art, ranging from ancient Cycladic figures to contemporary mixed media installations. In addition to its permanent collection, a portion of which is always on display, the museum sponsors special exhibitions, lectures, films, and other events throughout the year. A free audio tour of the museum's permanent collection is available. Kresge Art Museum is located on the first floor of Kresge Art Center, between the MSU Auditorium and the Alumni Chapel, near Snyder-Phillips residence hall. Admission is free.

Want to meet other art-smart students who share your interests? Become part of Kresge Art Museum's student organization, ASPIRE. ASPIRE plans social events and other art-related activities.

Department of Theatre

Were you in the drama club in high school? Take your love of the stage to the next level and check out the opportunities offered by the Department of Theatre. Like being the center of attention? Learn about upcoming auditions on the department's website. The spotlight not for you? Learn about opportunities in stage management and scene, costume, props, and lighting design. Pirouettes more your style? Learn about dance opportunities, including Orchesis, the student-run dance troupe, the MSU Repertory Dance Company concert; and the Dance Specialization.

Department of English

Follow in the footsteps of the many famous writers who have attended MSU, including Richard Ford, Jim Harrison, and Tom McGuane. Hone your craft by taking a creative writing course or by participating in the Red Cedar Review, a student-run journal published annually by the MSU Press that sponsors short fiction contests and internships.

Know the difference between anime and Dogme 95? The Film Studies Program, part of the Department of English, offers a Film Studies Option for English majors and a Film Studies Specialization for students in any major. MSU and East Lansing have a thriving and sophisticated film culture. The East Lansing Film Festival is held on campus every spring. Student groups include the MSU Campus Club and the MSU FilmMakers Club.
